Kamchatka berry how to plant ?

Container-grown Kamchatka berry seedlings can be planted any time of the season, whenever the weather allows us. Planting Kamchatka berry is not very complicated. To plant it properly we need to choose the right position and soil. Kamchatka berries require a sunny and warm position without much draught. The more sun the sweeter the fruit will be. In a shady or flamboyant place, the berries may be more bitter. The plant prefers permeable and fertile soils, but it will also do well on weaker soils. Kamchatka honeysuckle, compared to blueberry, does not like flooded and wet places. When planting, it is worth enriching the soil with manure or compost. Before planting, we make a hole at least 2x larger than the root ball. At the bottom we pour compost or manure and cover with a layer of soil so that the roots do not touch the fertilizer. Then we place the plant and thoroughly cover it with fertile soil. Finally, we water abundantly.

Further cultivation of the Kamchatka berry is not complicated. It does not need to cover it for the winter and we water it only during a long drought. We fertilize it every 2-3 years, for example, with compost or manure.

Remember. When planting Kamchatka berries, plant them in pairs, and it is best if you choose a variety that blooms at the same time. Pollinating varieties are given in the description above.

Why is it worth having a Kamchatka berry in the garden ?

Kamchatka berries are long-lived plants that are very easy to grow and will find a place in any garden. The berries start vegetation very early because the first buds appear in early March, so its fruits we can enjoy the earliest of all fruit plants, even strawberries bear fruit later. Kamchatka berry fruits are extremely healthy and their fruit itself is unusual and unique. Each variety has something different in itself, they differ in size, shape and sweetness.

How to cut Kamchatka berry ?

Cutting fruit bushes is a rather troublesome issue that our customers often ask about. Kamchatka berry is such an easy-to-grow plant that even left alone it will bear fruit abundantly and well without the need for pruning. The only pruning we can do is a rejuvenation pruning. For this purpose, we cut all the old shoots. But which ones are old? Old shoots are those that are the thickest, we can often notice moss on them. It is very easy to distinguish them from young shoots. In order for the berry to fruit well we run it on about 20 shoots, then the fruiting will be optimal and healthy. Of course, we also perform pruning when the plant is damaged or one of the shoots withers - such we remove so that it does not interfere with the plant. Kamchatka berry, which will be heavily cut, can become very dense, which will cause that the fruits will become small and deep inside the plant will be unripe and more bitter. We should make a clear-cutting cut only after about 5 years after planting. Pruning of Kamchatka berry should be done in early spring, preferably in March choosing a sunny day and without rain.
